Confirmed: crop failure in Rio Grande do Sul on rice and soybean

March 16, 2012

Already predicted some time ago, the crop failure in Rio Grande do Sul has been confirmed. Until now, 5% of the soybean crop was already harvested, while rice crops are 20% harvested.
The estimatives around rice say that the productivity will get 1,5 million tons less than the previous crop and 3 million tons less than what experts had projected for this crop.
The harvest started earlier in some parts of the state, but some areas will just start to be harvested in 30 days. A local institute for rice says that prices should increase on local market.
Besides of that, the expected productivity awaited about 8 tons per hectare, but now just 7,7 tons per hectare would be produced.
